Mass Exodus

So, it started out as a joke, a passing thought, if you will, caused by the re-election of who I’ll kindly refer to as The Village Idiot. As the days go by, and the decent people leave The Village Idiot’s cabinet– Colin Powell resigned today– the thought is becoming more and more real and decidedly appealing.

Like many of my liberal friends, I am considering what once seemed unimaginable, especially since I am quite fond of the warm climate in the South… Yes, my friends, I am considering jumping ship and fleeing to Canada… if they’ll have me.

Latest Strongbad Email

So, I watched it twice yesterday, and I’m getting ready to watch it again right now. What the heck am I talking about? It’s the latest Strongbad email, Montage. Check it out. It’s hilarious. A little humor to brighten up your Tuesday.

Noam Chomsky

So, I went on a Noam Chomsky shopping spree about a year ago, and I picked up several of his books. Unfortunately, I was in school at the time and didn’t have time to read much of them. With the election results getting me down, I went back to my Chomsky literature. I’ve read some of Hegemony or Survival, but right now I’m focused on Manufacturing Consent. So, I expect to be posting more about this research effort in the coming weeks. Here’s few nice quotes to get the ball rolling:

All over the place, from the popular culture to the propaganda system, there is constant pressure to make people feel that they are helpless, that the only role they can have is to ratify decisions and to consume.

Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state.

Resistance is feasible even for those who are not heroes by nature, and it is an obligation, I believe, for those who fear the consequences and detest the reality of the attempt to impose American hegemony.

Billy Howerdel

One of my new favorite vocalists is Billy Howerdel, the guitarist for APC. He’s actually doing lead and co-vocals on eMOTIVe, and he’s amazing. I really hope that he’s featured more in APC’s future albums. I had *no* idea. He’s on the level of Maynard, especially considering that I wasn’t sure if it was Maynard singing on all of these songs. Well, it’s not Maynard on all the tracks– Billy’s actually the lead vocalist on two of my favorite tracks (Peace, Love, and Understanding & Freedom of Choice). And he’s badass. Damn!

I like surprises like this one. Hell yeah!

Passive

I am ROCKING this SONG right! It’s so great that it deserves to be mentioned again on my blog, particularly the last couple verses. I’ve got to tell you, with several things going on in my life right now, unfortunately, this is my current theme song. Don’t get me wrong, I love this song, but it’s not the best theme song. I mean, just check out the poignant last two verses:

Wake up and face me

Don’t play dead ’cause maybe

Someday I’ll walk away and say

You fucking disappoint me

Maybe you’re better off this way

Go ahead and play dead

I know that you can hear this

Go ahead and play dead

Why can’t you turn and face me

Why can’t you turn and face me

Why can’t you turn and face me

Why can’t you turn and face me

You fucking disappoint me

The Cycle of Democracy

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasure. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship. The average of the world’s greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.

eMOTIVe

Well, one good thing did happen yesterday– A Perfect Circle’s new album (covers & a couple originals) came out. It is *really* good. Revolutionary anthems seem very appropriate given the election results and dismal mood of the day… for me at least. It’s a really interesting mix of songs and sounds, and I highly recommend it. However, Maynard could put out an album of Show Tunes or Kiddie songs, and I’d buy it. So I’m biased. But man, it’s good 🙂 Maynard is all over the map in how he’s flexing his vocal and creative muscles. The political and revolutionary messages behind these songs make them all the more appropriate, too.

Anyhow, one of the originals is called Passive, and it’s AWESOME. Apparently, it’s a rework of a Tapeworm song… Tapeworm was Maynard + Trent Reznor + Danny Lohner… a side project that kinda died. I was sad when Tapeworm never materialized an album… because I love Maynard and I love Trent. Well, this song somewhat makes up for the missing product. The theme and lyrics really hit home for me… check ’em out:

Dead as dead can be

The doctor tells me

But I just can’t believe him

Ever the optimistic one

I’m sure of your ability

To become my perfect enemy

Wake up and face me

Don’t play dead ’cause maybe

Someday i’ll walk away and say

You disappoint me

Maybe you’re better off this way

Leaning over you here

Cold and catatonic

I catch a brief reflection

Of what you could and might have been

It’s your right and your ability

To become my perfect enemy

Wake up and face me

Don’t play dead ’cause maybe

Someday i’ll walk away and say

You disappoint me

Maybe you’re better off this way

Maybe your better off this way (x3)

You’re better off this (x2)

Maybe you’re better off…

Wake up and face me

Don’t play dead ’cause maybe

Someday i’ll walk away and say

You fucking disappoint me

Maybe you’re better off this way

Go ahead and play dead

I know that you can hear this

Go ahead and play dead

Why can’t you turn and face me (x4)

You fucking disappoint me

Welcome to Four More Years of Syphilis

Well, the race has not yet been called, but it seems inevitable that Dubya’s gonna be in the helm for the next four years. I quoted Hunter S. Thompson in a previous post, and I think he put it best, “Four more years of George Bush will be like four more years of syphilis…Only a fool or a sucker would vote for a dangerous loser like Bush.”

Sadly, the majority of Americans are fools and suckers.

Nerve Racked

So, I did my civic duty today… and I voted in the general election! Of course, I cast presidential vote for John Kerry…

Now, I’ve done all I can do, but I am wildly nervous about the outcome of the election. Fortunately, I have to work at Radiant and Apple, so I won’t have any down time until after 10 pm to nervously watch the television. Still, I remain quite anxious waiting to see the fate of our nation for at least the next four years…
